Default Webpage won't display image with html link

1. i just install windows xp pro + sp1, ie 6 + sp1
2. all latest Windows & IE Security & Hotfix installed
3. the access to the internet is direct (without proxy)
4. upgraded from 56k modem to 1.5mbps samsung cable modem
5. webpage won't load all .gif & .jpg images with html link. a 'x' appears in placed of the .gif or .jpg image. i right click on that 'x' and select 'show picture', the image will load. the link still work at all times.
6. i tried the following but still could not solve the problem:-
- turn off Internet Connection Firewall
- install and run Sun Java J2RE 1.4.2_03 with MS VM JIT compiler disabled
- set my internet security zone to 'Low'
- set my internet privacy to 'Low'
- 'Cookies' handling & other internet parameters are set at default
7. after surfing the net for more than 1 hour, the problem is worst. sometimes when i click on a link, the webpage brings me to a site which i've been previously, totally not related to the current site link i am suppose to go. that previous webpage has some error in loading.
8. great improvement in the webpage displays (.gif an .jpg image) when i installed webwasher. but the extend of the problem still continues when i surf the net for more than 1 hour.
9. These problems did not exist when i was using Windows 98SE, IE 5.5 with 56K modem with the same hardware.
10. GREATLY appreciate if some kind soul can offer some solution.

idea

Check your browser settings. Make sure "load background and images" is enabled. eg: check mark in box.

If the option is not shown in XP (it is in Windows 98SE) then try this:

After installing Internet Explorer 6 SP1, there may be problems displaying small images; only image placeholders will appear.

IE6 seems to have a bug regarding third-party namespace providers.
Some of the types of offending programs may be download managers,
personal security software, ftp clients, popup ad blockers, and so on.
This fix may disable some functionality in those programs.

To make IE6 display small images again, delete the following registry
keys if they exist:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\http
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\https
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\ftp

The only key that should exist under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler is
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\mk

Thanks for that tip Jerry. I found that the only keys that exist under

In the * folder above, appears the following registries:
Name Type Data
ab (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
ab CLSID REG_SZ {9D148291-B9C8-11D0-A4CC-0000F8014F6}

should I delete the above registries? This problem is still there.
