found new hardware

I have a gateway 475 that originally had win98 and I installed xp home. now everytime it boots, it says found new hardware and it is installing 2 floppy drive controllers. does not recognize the floppy A: drive. If i uninstall one, then it instantly sees the floppy and it seems to work. I have uninstalled both, then rebooted and it always finds two. I was going to try and flash the BIOS but can't boot up with a floppy. any ideas?

I was finally able to flash my BIOS with the newest I could find from Gateway. Did not help my problem. Everytime you boot it, it finds 2 floppy drive controllers and renders the floppy disk A:drive inoperable.
Only thing I can figure is that the BIOS is too old to play with XP. Maybe something to do with the PNP??? Still would like to figure it out, but I think I am going to replace the motherboard and CPU.
