You only need a driver if you want to transfer still photos from the camera to the pc. For transferring video, you must use the Firewire port and Windows Movie Maker as your capture/editing program.
In case you're not aware, JVC offers very little support for their products. The only website that I'm aware of that offers any drivers at all is the Canadian website (however, the gr-d53ag is not listed):

That's not to say that one of the drivers there will work or not work, just that the gr-d53ag is not listed. It won't cause any harm to the pc or camera to try the usb drivers offered there.
