Gateway never shipped this notebook with Windows XP installed, hence, it's an un-supported OS.
Notebooks require specific drivers from the notebook maker and when they don't provide or offer such, your on your own. I'm not sure I could find you a working driver even if I knew what the actual hardware device was.... without it, you don't stand a chance at finding a driver. Before you learn to walk, you learn to crawl. Before you can locate a driver, you must first determine what the hardware is.
With the original OS installed, open Device Manager and take note of the network adapter. Is is a LAN or WLAN device? Chipset number? Is it integrated on the motherboard or a separate mini-card? Identification numbers?
