idea Re: DRIVER NEEDED: TSST cddvd (Windows XP Home) [IDE]

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP, Windows Vista, & Windows 7 all provide native support that allows an optical drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks, avi or mpeg video files, or for burning cd-rw or dvd disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required. Any modern optical drive is plug and play in all Windows OS's beginning with Windows 95.

If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in My Computer, and/or you get the following error message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39), there's 4 different methods to fix this problem.... take your choice from below: (Note: All 4 fixes do exactly the same thing)

Fix #1: Please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showth...t=21669&page=4

It contains manual instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix, that will solve the problem.
If only one of the two filters are listed, just proceed with deleting the one only, then resume.
Alternately, you can use any of the other fixes listed below: (Fix #3 is the easiest of all to use)

Fix #2:
Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.
You can find this thread here: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=30011

Fix #3: - (recommended fix)
And here's another method (CdGone.zip) that will do this procedure automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.
Code:
http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131 (automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip) Unzip the file, then launch it. I highly recommend this fix to use over the others. It's quick and requires no skill to use.

Fix #4:
Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from this Web site: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Download the file and save it to Desktop. Open an "admin" Command Prompt
Note: You must copy and paste (into Notepad) the text on the Doug Knox page then save it as xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
then run the .vbs file by typing the following at the console window:

wscript.exe "%userprofile%\desktop\xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs"

Now.... after performing this fix, don't reboot yet. Next, (in Device Manager), uninstall all optical drives listed
(if none are listed, continue with next step)...

Reboot the pc or "scan for hardware changes". Your drive(s) should now be visible in My Computer and work properly.
If the drive still fails to work properly after performing any of these fixes, it most likely will need to be replaced.

Also, for optical drive problems in Windows Vista, read this HP web page.

Even though it's for HP/Compaq machines, the same principals applies to all modern IDE optical drives regardless of brand.

If your drive stopped working after installing an Adobe product, please read this thread. Note: about 2/3rds. down the page
is a video that shows how to perform the "delete upper and lower filters fix".

This is a multi-page thread dealing with issues of the optical drive and problems encountered in Windows XP and Vista.
It covers a lot of issues and the most common causes and solutions. Click here to read the thread.

You can get instructions for performing this fix from Microsoft at this page [in Windows XP] and from this page. [in Windows 2000]

Jerry,

First, let me thank you for the various iterations of this thread; it's helped me do quite a bit of troubleshooting regarding this TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TSH492B. I haven't been successful in my goals to this end, however, and I wanted to get a query to your attention.

This drive came installed in a Dell Dimension 4700. Initially, everything worked fine. Dell bundled the Sonic Solutions RecordNow! suite with the machine, and, obviously, it's drivers integrated with the standard WinXP Home drivers for the optical drive.

At some point in the machine's lifetime (not my computer, a friend's), other software was installed that seemed to interfere with WinXP's capability of reading Photo-CD discs.

I removed the Upper & Lower Filters as indicated, and I even went as far as changing the driver of the drive itself (just using the Generic CD-ROM driver included with WinXP). After recovering back to square one (utilizing a Sonic driver as I found it), I decided to finally post-up.

I even went as far as changing IDE interfaces to get the thing to add a new profile to the registry. I know the drive probably works fine, but it's Windows being locked-in to utilize the driver set from Sonic and unable to do an install from scratch (using the Windows XP signed drivers only). I'm at a loss.

The discs work fine; I can put them in my MacBook Pro and look at everything. The discs themselves are in Joliet format (ISO 9660) and no special "UDF-type" of thing is going on here.

As for a specific question: Do you know of a way to bring windows back to "zero" in terms of this drive and the drivers it thinks it needs to use? I'd like it to auto-detect it from scratch as if this were a fresh installation, but, of course, I want to avoid re-installing WinXP.

As for an alternate question: Would something prevent a Photo CD from being read?

Thanks again for your help.

- Dave

First off, there is no alternate Windows XP driver.... the driver packaged with Windows XP is the only Windows driver in existence. The driver that you think is a Sonic driver is not a Windows driver, it's a DOS driver. You do not want a dos driver to load on a Windows machine unless you know how to edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat file and insert commands to do so. Allowing a DOS driver to load on a machine running Windows will ultimately cause a pc to run very sluggishly and also produce dos-compatibility mode errors.

So forget about any other driver because you don't have that choice. Microsoft designed Windows XP OS to provide native support that allows a drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk..... nothing else.

I suggest you un-install ALL software relating to the optical drive first. At that point you need to then test the drive to see if it will read a data and music disk. A Photo CD is no different than a standard data disk with regard to how it's read by the drive. Then and only then do you want to re-install ONE burning software (not 2 or 3 or 4, but ONE only. Having multiple burning softwares on a pc will cause conflicts. And always un-install the current burning software before trying to install a different burning software.

Then test the burn functions. If it passes, then install dvd decoding software like WinDVD or PowerDVD and test the dvd reading status. If everything works, you're done.

A drive that fails the basic test of reading a data or music disk will also fail all subsequent tests performed for burning and reading a dvd movie disk.... so it does no good to install any software pertaining to the drive IF the drive fails that basic test of reading a data or music disk (or a Photo CD disk).

Performing the "remove the Upper & Lower Filters" fix is only to be performed on a machine when the drive fails to appear in "My Computer".

And for your last question, Do you know of a way to bring windows back to "zero" in terms of this drive and the drivers it thinks it needs to use?

Yes, by doing a reformat and reload the os.

I'd like it to auto-detect it from scratch as if this were a fresh installation, but, of course, I want to avoid re-installing WinXP.

When you perform the registry fix mentioned above, it will cause the system to re-detect/re-install the drive automatically without user intervention (during bootup) or by clicking on Action ---> scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.

Also, your drive could very well be defective. The only way to know is to test it in a different machine or have it tested by a professional shop.

Let me know the results of your tests.
