MDT drives are apparently repaired WD drives but no luck in finding drivers for this 80GB 7200rpm IDE HD mounted in an external case.

No such driver exists. External firewire drives are plug and play in Windows XP OS providing the Firewire / 1394 controller is installed and working. It (ie: the Firewire / 1394 controller) should be visible in Device Manager and reported as working. Most all Firewire / 1394 controllers are supported by Windows XP native drivers.
