DRIVER NEEDED: SoundMAX Gateway E4000 Intel motherboard (Windows XP Home)

I have purchased an old computer from a library, so I am not sure when it was made. From what I understand, it was running on Windows 2000 or earlier, and the sound worked. When I obtained the machine, I immediately changed the hard drive with a brand new one and installed a home copy of Windows XP. Now I cannot find the correct sound drivers. Gateway no longer offers support to this series of computer, and the company they sold it to (MPC) is now out of business. I have spent weeks trying to find a sound driver that will work on this machine while it is using Windows XP. Here is some information about the computer from an Everest scan. If anyone could help, I would sincerely appreciate it. I apologize if I've neglected anything pertinant - I'm new to the site and am a relative novice at this type of computer work! (I have no idea what "Interface Type" is in the dropdown above, so I listed "Other")

According to the Everest summary report, this machine has a AD1981A sound chip. The summary report also shows it to be a Audio Adapter Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1] and that's wrong. There is no such sound chip.

Most all sound chips bear names like Realtek, Cmedia, ADI SoundMax, and IDT/Sigmatel.

I don't think I've ever loved anyone as much as I love you right now! (and my husband says he's willing to have your children).

What I could not achieve in weeks, you settled in one try! I think that my computer summary read the wrong item, because I was trying to install random drivers at one point, and Realtek was one of those. A bit of it must have hung in there after I tried to uninstall it.
