There is no such manufacturer as "standard cd-rom". LiteOn builds the DH16A3L drive and HP uses this model in some of their pc's. And it does not require any drivers when used in Windows Vista OS.

Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP and Windows Vista both provide native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.

Fix #1:
If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in "My Computer", please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showth...t=21669&page=4

It contains manual instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix, that will solve the problem.

Fix #2:
Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

Fix #3:
And here's another method that will do this procedure automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

Code:
http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131 (automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip) Unzip the file, then launch it.

Fix #4:
Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from this Web site: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Now, after performing this fix, don't reboot yet. Next, (in Device Manager), uninstall all optical drives listed (if none are listed, continue with next step)...

Reboot the pc. Your drive(s) should now be visible in My Computer and work properly.

Also, for optical drive problems in Windows Vista, read this HP web page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...s=2093&lang=en

When you give no clues, you get no help. Some additional information is needed before we can possibly help you.

What operating system are you running? Possibly Vista?

Has it always done this or did it just start?

Is the problem on a desktop or laptop?

PC Brand and Model?

DVD/CD info from Device Manager, Optical drives?

Do you have multiple burning softwares installed?

If so, what burning softwares/versions do you have installed?

If you have AnyDVD installed, uninstall it first and retest?

Did you install any software to cause this problem to start?

Have you tried restoring the pc to an earlier date using System Restore?

The drives Region setting may be blank. Go to Disk Manager in Computer Management and right click the DVD drive. In properties, change the Region to the correct one (2= UK, 1=USA).

Do you have VMware installed? By default, VMware disables autorun upon installation due to possible conflicts with some drives. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSET\Servic es\CDRom, and look for the "Autorun" key. If its value is set to "0", set it to "1" and reboot.

Do you have anti-virus and anti-malware software installed and updated? If so, list all names and versions.
