This drive is plug and play in Windows XP providing your usb port(s) are working so I'd check those first in Device Manager to insure they're working ok.
Does it work properly on a different system?

No error messages of any sort regarding this nonrecognition?

At the very least...I suggest connecting it to known good system and running chkdsk /r on the drive in question.

How to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console:

1. Insert XP CD. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
2. Type the numeral "1" to choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
3. When you are prompted to do so, type the administrator password. If there is no administrator password, leave it blank and just press ENTER.
4. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
5. When Chkdsk has finished running, read the results, and then take any necessary steps to complete the process.
6. Restart the computer, if it does not restart on its own.

Recovery Console does not work with USB drives. And, if it does not recognize the device - it cannot assign a drive letter - therefore, CHKDSK is also out of the question. I had the same issue with the same drive. Western Digital does not have driver. So - I chucked it out the window and now - only by Seagate portable drives. WD sucks when it comes to external drives.

Only a moron would chuck an external drive. Smart folks would figure out what's wrong and correct it. I personally own 2 and have kinfolks with several WD ext. drives.... not a problem from any. They are plug and play in Windows XP with SP1, SP2, or SP3 installed. No driver is required. Proper drive configuration and a working USB port are essential.

I have the same issue with mine. Same model. Every other USB device works on my computer. I think I'll try to figure it out and not just "chuck it out the window". You think there's a pile of various computer parts outside his window just laying on the lawn? "Damn, can't get that to work" FLING!

Do you purchase it already assembled or did you assemble it yourself? All my IDE to USB drives have the jumper set to CableSelect. Have you tried that setting with yours?
