Exclamation DRIVER NEEDED: Optiarc DVD RW AD-5530A (Windows Vista)

My drive will play Program CD's and CD-R's but not DVD's DVD+RW's or cd-rw's it used to but it won't any more is there a driver update for it. Or another solution to the problem. I have 6 months of the warranty left but am trying to avoid ahving to send it in as I would loose it for 3 to 4 weeks. Not good seeing I work on it every day all day long.

Jason

Optical drives never require anything other than the native support that's built-in to the os. ie: the Vista OS has support for this drive automatically.

But you need dvd decoding software (like WinDVD or PowerDVD) installed in order for the drive to read/play dvd movie disks.

why would it have stopped playing some and not others? And seeing that the CyberLink DVD suite is installed on the system should it play DVD's

Yes it should. It sounds like you have a flaky drive.

I tried winDVD with no change and I'm gonna try Power DVD next if that doesn't work then it looks like I'm gonna have to send this thing in and have the drive replaced. Just sucks that I won't have it for three to 4 weeks. I'm wondering if I just buy a new drive my self and install it if I'd be better off. I'm told these aren't that expensive.

cheaper to buy new than to repair. Drives are cheaper now than ever before.

Just Talked to Everex last night and this particular drive which I found out on my own is an OEM only model it's got a goofy face plate that is steped length wise and then the front most end has a dog leg in it. So basically if I tried to replace it myself the face plate on any new drive won't fit flush. Also found out that wonderful Everex doesn't sell this drive as a replacement part so if this ever happens again out of warranty I would have to send it in again and pay for it. This will be the last Item I ever get from Everex. I can only see sending this thing in unless other drives have that dog lrg in them and it's covered by the face plate. Which does come off.
