Hi there Acer user,

ALL of us who have this same makers (Acer) laptops, have the same problem. I personally have the Aspire 3680. Nothing regarding these DVD burners ever work correctly using NTI! I suggest you find and purchase something like Roxio or Nero burning software and remove the NTI junk. The only other way around this is to purchase a external DVD drive. NTI will then notice a good valid drive and you can switch to that while at home. Otherwise, Acer makes junk. Cheap junk. Which is why they are one of the worlds top selling PC makers. That doesn't mean they work, just that many of us found them cheap enough to buy the first time around. However, after going through 3 Acer laptops, I am completely through buying them EVER again. Consider HP, despite what anyone says about their old site, HP has a great support setup and ALWAYS has someone out there who is using the same and knows how to make it work if it fails. If you want to continue using Acer, consider buying both a external DVD burner and the software. You'll need it later! ~ Jim Grim (host of The HailDarkLord Show on BlogTV.com)

ducoty said he has a dvd reader and cd-rom combo. That type of drive doesn't require burning software. All it needs beyond Windows Vista is compatible dvd decoding software like WinDVD or PowerDVD.

But ducoty is wrong as this drive can also burn cd-r and cd-rw disks but not dvd disks.

This is what this drive can do (if it's working properly):

CAN READ CDR : YES
CAN READ CDRW : YES
CAN READ CDRM2 : YES
CAN WRITE CDR : YES
CAN WRITE CDRW : YES
CAN TEST WRITE : YES
CAN READ DVD-ROM : YES
CAN READ DVD-R : YES
CAN READ DVD-RW : YES
CAN READ DVD-RAM : NO
CAN READ DVD+R : YES
CAN READ DVD+RW : YES
CAN WRITE DVD-R : NO
CAN WRITE DVD-RW : NO
CAN WRITE DVD-RAM : NO
CAN WRITE DVD+R : NO
CAN WRITE DVD+RW : NO
MAX CDR READ SPEED : 24
MAX CDR WRITE SPEED: 24

WRONG! I just spent 2 hours on the phone as well as physically pulled the drive. Read below.

I am currently working off a Acer Aspire 3680-2682 model with a Slimtype LITE-ON DVD C DS24CZP "DVD/CD-RW Combo" as labeled. I am running Windows Vista Basic with NTI 7 Gold (bundled software) and Roxio Media Creator 10 running. This is NOT a software issue!

This drive presented in the Acer Aspire 3680 series known as "Slimtype (LITE-ON) DVD C DS24CZP ATA Device" in Device Manager is a DVD-ROM only!

Acer technical department confirms that this device CAN NOT write DVDs at all because it is only a DVD-ROM. The labeling is written as containing a "DVD/CD-RW Combo" but does not make it clear that this device CAN NOT write to DVDs. There is no driver to correct this problem. There is no software to cause it to become something different than it is.

If you question this please flp this unit over, remove the single center screw that lines up with the CD drawer and pull the device out (WITH THE UNIT OFF!) You will note the devices label states it is a DVD-ROM.

If it says something other that "DVD-ROM / CD-RW" across the top of the label you may be one of the lucky few who did NOT get an Acer with the substandard parts. These were standard issue to all those Acer Aspire 3680's that were sold through Walmart.

Now, with that said, some of you may be also interested in knowing that "Device Not Present" when flipping on your Bluetooth button, means they ALSO did not include this transmitter or receiver on building this model. They only included the equipment and program to make it ready to use, but not the actual hardware.

!!!- NOTICE THIS -!!!

I hope that (as I have seen many complain about these issues) everyone will pass along this information and a word of caution about purchasing a new ACER PC in the future. Acer has a policy of labeling ALL it's computers laptop and desktop alike, with ALL the possible features of it's top of the line model and a "* Specifications vary depending on model" disclaimer on ALL external boxes and demo labels. THIS MEANS YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU GET, NOT, repeat NOT(!!) WHAT YOU SEE! Acer has been informed of this on their marketing in both the UK and US. They stand by their base stance that they are doing nothing wrong in advertising for a DIFFERENT system on the external box and PC labels.

Need to buy the right DVD-RW drive? They have 3 main companies which carry this part in stock by Acer Model number.

Express Computers

Kahlon Comapny

My name is (no personal info or advertising allowed)

I hope I have been of assistance to all of us who were taken in by the Acer scam. Keep in mind they are (as of this writing) the 3rd largest and 2nd most bought PC in the world. I do not work for, nor am employed by ANY PC company. I am an independent computer re-builder and my interest is solely in seeing this information brought to the public eye. I welcome any feedback.

Just to be clear, I am stating that the idea of burning DVDs with this drive is wrong and impossible. Please note that before leaving a negative comment. I noticed that it looked like I was saying the last comment about it being a DVD Reader was wrong, it's not wrong, it's correct. It will READ DVD not WRITE DVD.

Hi haildarklord,

Please point out to me, and the other members, what part of my post is "wrong" as you claim.

Read my reply just posted above yours. I was NOT saying you were wrong. I explained that in my small reply under the larger one.Like it says, I sounded like I was saying you were wrong but I meant the idea of being able to burn with a DVD-ROM. A few others had posted in other areas that all that was needed was burning software. It's just a DVD-ROM and no software will help that issues. They will need new hardware. That's what I explained in the larger post. Sorry for the misunderstanding. ~ Jim
