Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. The XP os provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It does not offer any support for playing dvd disks. For that task, compatible dvd decoding software is required.
The term "doesn't work" won't do much for you getting help. If I told you my car "doesn't work", could you tell me how to fix it based on the vague information I gave you?
Doesn't work could mean any of the following:
1: Doesn't read a dvd disk.
2: Doesn't read a cd data or music disk.
3: Doesn't spin
4: Drawer doesn't open or close.
5: Doesn't burn a cd-r or cd-rw disk
Optical drives are plug and play. You don't install an optical drive (like other hardware), Windows installs it for you. When it doesn't, then you have other problems that must be addressed. You gave us nothing to work with so we'll have to start at step 1 before we can get to step 2, 3, etc.
Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager?
Has it ever work? New drive or used drive? How is it configured and connected? Is the bios set correctly to reflect the drive? Is it the only optical drive in the system? Have you made any recent changes in hardware or software to cause it to suddenly stop working? Have you tested it in another pc to see if it works? Have you considered it might be defective?
