Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. The XP OS provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk adn to burn a cd-r disk. It does not provide any support for playing dvd movie disks. For that task, compatible dvd decoding software is required, ie: WinDVD, PowerDVD, or Divx Player.
