Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. The XP os provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. Any other function like burn cd-rw or dvd and play dvd movie disks require 3rd. party software like Nero or Easy Cd Creator and WinDVD or PowerDVD.
