a WD5000C032-002 is not a hard disk controller, it's a hard disk. Hard disks do not require drivers when used in Windows os's.

I'm having the same problem, but for win98.
my xp pro 64 had no problems with finding the 500 GB drive, but my xp pro 64 had a devistating crash from net frameworks.

now I can't install xp back on, some of my sectors were dammaged from the crash.
I'm stuck in WIN98 mode for now, but 98 says it can't find drivers for my external hard drive.

I'm looking for a driver to install a WD5000D032 (Western Digital 500GB My Book Premium)

Not sure as to the cause, but my drive will no longer work. Windows does not recognize the device.

True, it is not a hard disk controller, it is a hard disk. However, the drive will not function with my Windows XP Pro or my Windows Vista b/c the systems can not locate drivers.

If anybody can help on this, it would be wonderful.

USB hard drives used in Windows ME, 2000, XP, XP64, and Vista do not require any drivers. These type of drives are plug and play in those OS's providing your USB controller is working. Check in Device Manager to insure the usb is working.

USB drives used in Windows 98 will require a driver for the USB Enclosure. This is not considered a hard drive driver, it's simply a driver to enable the system to see that a drive is present. You must identify the USB chipset inside the enclosure or identify the actual USB Enclosure manufacturer in order to find a driver for Windows 98 (and some manufacturers simply don't support Windows 98)
Again HARD DRIVES do not require a driver (in any OS).
