I have an Armada 1580 notebook....It will not boot at all. When powered all I get is the right led on constant until the power or the hibernate is pressed then it goes to a fast flash. Any ideas ? The internal modem is burnt, wondering is the board is fried or maybe shorted or open because of the modem....Im lost on this one ! Help

Question Omen

If you can not boot into the OS and you know "The internal modem is burnt" then you must know the history of the notebook. When did it stop working? Voltage spike from lightning? Do you have the printed documentation?, if not you may be find it at Compaq download. Can you get into the B.I.O.S ? If not check the documentation how to do this. If the modem is removable remove it. If not disable it either with jumper setting or in the B.I.O.S. It may have a dead C.M.O.S. battery. Some older boards will hang if the battery is dead, You can sometimes hit a key combination to load the default settings. When in the B.I.O.S. check if its detecting the hard drives and disable the modem if done from in B.I.O.S. If you can get into the B.I.O.S. Compaq normally has diagnostics that can be run from the B.I.O.S. menu. If you get the B.I.O.S. loading but can't boot into the OS try to boot from a floppy.
If you get it booting from a floppy let us know. If more then the modem was damaged, I.E. parts of MB, HD floppy it might not be worth fixing, Replace one part and discover another is bad. This might be an omen, If you really want a new notebook ignore all of the above.
