idea Re: DRIVER NEEDED: Toshiba MK4025GAS (Windows XP Professional) [IDE]

Drivers don't make a hard drive work... the system bios does. If you have it correctly configured and connected to a working ide port, it will work. But you gave no details of how you setup the drive, that makes it difficult to help you.

Care to tell us how you installed and configured it?

Default Re:"unknown device "Toshiba MK4025GAS (Windows XP Professional)

Hi,
I have a similar problem.
My computer xp pro sp2 is not recognising my Toshiba MK4025GAS hard drive.
when inserted, it says unknown device.
the same is working on every other computer. i dont know wats wrong with my computer.
ive tried everything like update driver, add hardware wizard, adding registry entry to usbstor etc. but no luck.
Earlier it used to work but now its not working.
i read here that drivers dont make hard disk work.
so wat should i do?
when i see driver details of hard disk in other's computer...it shows a file called disk.sys
i checked that even my pc has that file...
im struggling...please help

IDE drives do not require any drivers.... the system bios provides support (along with the ide controller which is supported natively by the Windows XP os).

Is your drive detected or not detected? If it's not detected then it will not be listed in My Computer.

Please list how you have the drive configured. Master or slave, connected to primary or secondary ide port. Is the ide port enabled in pc bios? What is listed under IDE CONTROLLERS in Device Manager?

Hi Jerry,
THanks for responding to my query.
Even though im not a technical guy, i have gathered answers to ur questions whatever i could understand.
I have also screenshots which i can send if ur provide email id.

1. My external hard disk is plug & play. It is not detected in my computer. pop up comes in taskbar notification saying unknown device. even my friends external hard disk is not working in this computer.
But other devices like pendrive, memory stick are working just fine.

2.I have done nothing to configure the drive as it is plug & play.

3.i opened PC bios and here is how "cmos features" looks:
IDE PRIMARY MASTER: ST340810A
IDE PRIMARY SLAVE: NONE(inside this menu everthing is AUTO)
IDE SECONDARY MASTER: HLDTST-GCE-85273
IDE SECONDARY SLAVE: NONE(inside this menu everthing is AUTO)

4.i opened PC bios and here is how "integrated peripherals" looks:

both IDE CHANNELS ENABLED

And jerry, another important thing is that the same problem is occuring in the windows 98 that i have in the same computer. i installed the drivers for 98 but still same unknown device is coming.

I hope i have given all ur answers required for ur reference.

waiting for ur reply,
Kalyan

Seagate ST340810A??? I thought you said you have a Toshiba MK4025GAS hard drive. a MK4025GAS is an internal IDE hard drive... not an external USB model (unless you mounted it inside an external usb enclosure). Even if you did, that makes no difference in it's plug and play ability. The only thing different is the controller. USB hard drives must have a working usb port to plug into.

Note: USB hard drives are not plug and play in Windows 98.... only in Windows ME/2000/XP/Vista.

Hi Jerry,
it is indeed an external casing with toshiba mk4025gas fitted into it.
it has a usb wire to plug into the usb port. like i said it works well on other computers.
i has also come with drivers for windows 98 so it works like plug & play once the drivers installed for the usb.
seagate disk is the internal one.
usb one is not getting detected. can u help me out? do u need more info? please let me know..
give me ur email id so i can send u screenshots of this problem.
Thanks,
Kalyan
