my computer is acknowledging that a new device is found. When i go to update the software it is saying that there is no software for this device. I can not get any cound from my speakers nor can i acess my volume controls. Please help me out here.

S3 never made sound chipsets, only video chipsets and they have been out of business for several years. And the remainder of your numbers/letters don't make much sense, eg: Q9cefb 86c617 9736 b7m62

Q9cefb = ?????? not even found using Google
86c617 = a mb chipset number
9736 = date code, built in 1997, 36th week
b7m62 = ?????? found using Google, but nothing relating to video

I suggest you download and install Belarc Advisor from www.belarc.com, run it, then repost in this thread a report from Belarc Advisor.

Belarc failed to detect what sound device your motherboard has. It also failed to give us a complete bios id string. You'll need to provide that for us... note during bootup, the lower left corner of your monitor screen.... it will appear something like this:

We need to know the full and exact bios id string.... like in this photo.

If your sound device is integrated on the motherboard, drivers might be available from the MB manufacturer. You do have the sound enabled in pc bios setup right? We are unable to figure out who made the motherboard with the data belarc provided.

The 86C617 card is actually the same chipset as the Turtle Beach Daytona. So, off to the Turtle Beach site. They have the driver that works—grab the NT driver from there and install it. All I found on driverguide.com were outdated Win 9x drivers.

the B3 identifies your motherboard as BCM. and according to this page:

It mostly likely is on motherboard QS440BX? or QS440BX

Note: According to the specs on the page above, this motherboard does not have integrated sound. Is your sound add-on? If so why didn't you include that information in your 1st post?
