Default sony mavica fd97 and windows xp home problem

I have a Sony Mavica FD97. I can download pictures from the memory stick on this camera to my laptop, which has WinXP Pro. Using the same camera, cable, etc, when I hook up to my PC, which uses WinXP home, the OS does not autodetect the camera. Using the add hardware does nothing either. I have uninstalled everything to do with the USB and reinstalled, still nothing. All other devices using the USB work fine, such as mouse and keyboard (I have tried different variations, all work). I have tried loading different USB drivers (such as the one for
Sony CD cameras), but to no avail. No yellow ! in the system properties under hardware. No reported conflicts with IRQ's. Just no autodetection.

Does anyone have any ideas about why WinXP home is not detecting my digital camera when hooked up via the USB cable.

Many thanks.
