Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from 95 up. Windows 2000 provides native support that allows your drive to read a data or music disk. Compatible dvd decoding software will provide the support necessary to allow it to play dvd disks.
When properly connected/configured, the os should recognize the drive during bootup and a listing should appear in Device Manager under CD-ROM showing the drive. If the os fails to detect the drive, here are the most common reasons:
1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.
2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.
3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or...
4: Wrong ide drivers installed.
5: IDE port is disabled in bios.
6: Improperly flashed firmware
7: Defective drive.
