HELP NEEDED: ASUS P55T2P4C (Windows 98)

I'm trying to install a 40GByte HDD (IDE) to a P55T2P4C Motherboard. It seems to be impossbile, due to disk size. I have the latest BIOS-update, (v0207) from Nov -98. I think 40 GB was probably quite utopic at that time!?
Can this be solved? If the Bios/Motherboard can not handle the size, could I reformat the HDD to an acceptable size?
