USB connected optical drives do not require any drive when used in Windows XP. The os provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. Optional 3rd party recording software may also be used.
If your usb port is working properly and the drive is configured properly inside the usb enclosure, the system will automatically detect/install this device within 4-5 seconds after it's plugged into a usb port.
What happens when it's plugged in? Any notification of "new hardware found"?

New hardware is found. In the device manager it shows that XP found a "mass storage device". It also shows the error message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

Is your usb port usb 1.1 or usb 2.0?
What is the usb enclosure? usb 1.1 or usb 2.0?
What is the condition of your usb port in device manager?
You won't get usb 2.0 support unless you have SP1 or SP2 installed. eg: Windows Update or Microsoft website for XP service packs.

Your suggestions worked. I already have SP2 installed so I followed the instructions for modifying the registry and it worked. The usb key was not in the register so I had to add it like Microsoft suggested.

Thanks a lot

Don
