No drivers are required when using this drive in Windows XP (other than what the os provides and by compatible recording and dvd decoding software). Windows XP includes native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It contains no support for burning cd-rw or dvd disks or for playing dvd disks. For those 2 tasks, compatible recording and dvd decoding software is required.
eg: Easy CD Creator V5.x (or higher), Easy Cd & DVD Creator v6.x, Nero V 5.5.5.1 (or higher), WinDVD or PowerDVD
CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP

Thumbs up Re: DRIVER NEEDED: MATSHITA MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-811 Driver (Windows XP Home)

FORGET THE SEARCH FOR THE DRIVER AND DO NOT BUY AN EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE....TRY THIS FIRST!

Ok everyone, my matshita dvd-ram stopped working and I had the drive replaced
2 times and the third time I simply bought an external dvd player. this was last year. Yesterday I decided to reformat my computer, but learned....it cannot be done with a external dvd cd player. I spent about 16 hours searching the net for a driver for the Matshita UJ-811, and discovered like everyone, there is no such driver updates. I called Bestbuy, they wanted 200 plus just to go through my computer when all I wanted was to have my hard drive wiped since I had no CD player that would work, another place wanted 120 plus. Being flustrated at that point..I sat for a few thinking and then decided to open up the dvd door just to look inside, I started sliding the optical lens housing up and down and realized it was sort of tight. I grabbed a Q-tip and spread WD-40 on it. I wiped the inside parts where the optical drive slid up and down with the q-tip and took a little pressure and lifted the metal plate up that surrounds it. Well I be dam....my drive was working again and so far had no problem. I could of saved my money on that external dvd cd player. The Matshita drive is a factory defect...but fixable as you can see, just needs to be loosen up some. SO do not waste your time looking for drivers for it, because you will not find one and do not spend your hard earned money on an external drive.....try what I did first and chances are you'll be very pleased.

I had the same problem as Klemen and tried both of the fixes posted on this thread. One did work: it was Jerry K's. I followed the link he posted to the microsoft website #321641 titled "How to Troubleshoot Issues with Reading CD, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD Discs in Win XP". From there i followed the instruction on "How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state (http://support.microsoft.com/default...n-us%3B310353). I uninstalled most of the software on my computer that accessed the CD-ROM drive, booted in a "clean" state, rebooted, and i was fine - worked like a champ. I had to do the "clean boot" steps manually as the "Guided Help" program MS offers wasn't available at the time. Importantly, I had to go all the way on the "clean boot" - meaning I had to do the optional Step #4 which disabled a bunch of other features and erased all of my old restore points. Bottom line is it worked and I'm back in action. Thanks, Jerry.
