winxp shutdown

when I shutdown my windows xp pc it just goes to the black screen telling me it is safe to shut down. windows 98 used to actually power down this pc. this is most annoying as I have to sit and wait so that I can manually power down the mahine. can someone please give me some ideas on a fix...

Thanks Chrys, I had the same problem as Sharky and was lucky enough to do a search and find your post. I was thinking it was a bios problem and looking for an update. This answer is much easier and it worked.
