idea No Dial Tone

My first post here and I find myself offering unasked for advice, anyway here goes.

Helping a friend to get connected to the internet on an oldish Dell PC his son had handed down to him, we kept getting stopped with the message "No Dial Tone".

Predictably this message was incorrect. The real problem was that the PC wasn't finding the internal modem.

The solution was to take out the modem card and replace it in the adjacent PIC slot on the motherboard. On re-booting the PC suddenly "found" it's new hardware and happily found the appropriate driver from the very same CD of Dell drivers we had, that it point blank refused to acknowledge before.

There must be a problem with the PCI slot you were using. I remember my PC giving the same error. But it turned out to be a modem fault.
