Question Scanjet 6100C hardware problem?

My scanner, which has been working for years, suddenly began hanging on initialization. I thought it was software/driver problem. However, I now think maybe it's a hardware problem.

I completely uninstalled HP software/driver & MS Ofc doc imaging software, leaving only Win XP "Scanner and Camera Wizard". The scanner responds with light coming on and completes it's "process" after about 10 mins. yielding a totally "black" output.

Anybody with scanner hardware knowledge, have any ideas? I really liked this scanner.

Scanners will not operate without a driver. Reinstall the driver and you should be ok.

Thanks, Jerry. But the Win XP driver files were installed when Windows recognized the new hardware.
scsiscan.sys
hpsjmcro.dll
wiafbdrv.dll
Any other ideas?

TIA

It sounds like your plugging the scanner into the machine without any HP software on it. Don't.... leave the scanner unplugged, install the HP software, then plug the scanner in when prompted.

Note: This is assuming your scanner is usb interfaced.

Jerry,

My scanner is attached via Adaptec AHA-2930CU card.

I tried the HP software again, no luck. It starts to communicate, the light comes on, but then after a few minutes it times out. A failure to communicate error comes up. I click ok and close deskscan program. A min or two later the scanner seems to go back to the start point.

Look in Device Manager under SCSI Controllers and check to see if the scsi card is installed and working properly.
