There's a previous thread with about 130 posts about this same subject. You can read it for perhaps some ideas.

boot system with windows xp cd to setup, choose recovery console, in command console type this to recover system hive. make sure you type it in as ive typed and enter after every line, or your os will be shot and you'll have to clean install.

md tmp<enter>
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\temp\system.bak<enter>
delete c:\windowssystem32\config\system<enter>
copy c:\window\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system<enter>

if this doesnt work reboot system as above and type:

md tmp<enter>
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\temp\software.bak<enter>
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software<enter>
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software<enter>

To recover your missing files you can try data recovery software. It help to recover deleted or lost files either because of software malfunction or due to accidental format. I have some good luck with Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software a good file and partition recovery utility.
Download the demo version of this partition recovery and scan your hard drive, scan result will show you the preview of the lost data.

I too am having this problem, only when I try to get into the repair part of the program it asks for a administrator password. I never put one in so I hit enter it tells me the password is incorrect. I am running two operating systems on my computer XP on one hard drive and Vista on the other. I despise Vista since it seems to want to disconnect my dial up every five minutes or so. I need help to get XP running again, is there a way to fix it from Vista since I know it works. Or is there a way around the password so I can do it the hard way. I have gone through the other post about this and didn't see anything that could help me. Please advise.

Hi i am having exactly the same problem, i have tried to put the original operating xp cd in and it does not do anything, i have tried f8 and reboot and then f8 and then chose 'last known good configuration' and it just goes back to the error message \windows\stem32\config error? Any suggestions please, i am not very computer savvy, can you tell!

idea Re: missing/corrupt file \windows\system32\config\sys

your request is a bit puzzling to me. This thread and another thread mention by me in a post just a few posts above yours has all kinds of help dealing with how to fix this problem. It appears as if you have not read these threads or tried any of the fixes mentioned. I suggest you read both threads and try some of the fixes and if you still have problems, post what you've done and what the results were. I see no reason for your post if you had read either thread.
