Default Ms-dos

I have a packard bell windows 95 computer. I used the recovery diskette and restared the computer. Then, when i restarted it, it showed starting MS-DOS... and then a space and then it shows C:\>. IT never did this until i used the diskette. What is wrong. Can anybody tell me how to fix this in a fairly easy way to understand. Thanx

Default Win recovery

In all probability, the start diskette/recovery diskette has a truncated MSDOS.SYS file. the file size is supposed to be 1024 bytes. If it is 6 bytes, or something like that, u need the correct file.
At the C:\ prompt, check if windows starts by typing "win". Try "win /d:m". This second command will start the PC in safe mode. Either way, the PC is startable in win. Next open the file MSDOS.SYS (using or simply type "c:\msdos.sys |more". See if the line 6 (or 7) reads 'bootgui=1'. If it reads 0, the PC will start in DOS. If the line reads 1, and the PC is not starting in windows, the problem lies possibly inthe size of file. It is also possible that some files are missing (himem.sys is sometimes the major culprit)I am pasting the contents of the MSDOS.SYS file below. Copy and paste the exact contents into MSDOS.SYS. U will have to change the attributes of the file using "attrib msdos.sys -h -r -a -s".After saving the file, reset attributes by "attrib msdos.sys +h +r". This should normally do the trick.

;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
