You cannot have an internal drive with a PCMCIA interface. It must be external to be PCMCIA. The Toshiba SD-R2102 is an internal IDE/ATAPI compliant drive which never requires a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd disks. For that task, compatible recording & dvd decoding software is required.

If problem is non-detection by the os, read on....

Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

Default Re: DRIVER NEEDED: Toshiba Driver SD-R2102 (Windows XP Home) [PCMCIA]

Thank you for your help.
But i have already tried all the solutions i have found here, I read and tried all your suggestions.
This is my problem: i have installed a program named driver detective, beacuse i was trying to search an update for my video card's driver.
After installation i run the scan and the program showed a lot of non updated drivers. So i have installed the updates, i know, this was a mistake because i forgot to read the updates characteristics.
One of them "wdm_A398" has been suggested by driver detective, to update audio, video and games controller.
After this my dvd-rom became unavailable. My OS does't read the cd-dvd rom.
And if i try to delete the driver (in the Device Manager, the drive with the question mark on, as indicated by a post of yours, when i try to re-install it, i recieve an error message, saying that there was an error during installation, the driver could not work... etc.)

And I can't find the way to delete the new update...

I hope to have written in a clear English, because I'm Italian and my English is not so good.
Thank you for your help, anyway.

Forget trying to install wdm_A398. That's probably what's causing your problem. Figure out what motherboard you have by using Everest, then download (and install) the correct drivers from the mb manufacturer.

If you need further assistance, please post a Summary from Everest.

And btw, your English is perfect. I wish everyone could speak English that well.

Thank you again, I have already installed Everest.
I don't know this utility. So I gave a look to the motherboard and this is what i read in the description window:
ID Motherboard: <DMI>
Name MB: Toshiba S1900-101

Front Side Bus:
Bus type: Intel NetBurst
Bus: 64 bit
Clock real: 100 MHz (QDR)
Clock: 400 MHz
Band : 3200 Mb/s

Bus Memory:
Type: SDR SDRAM
Bus: 64 bit
Real Clock: 133 MHz
Clock: 133 MHz
Band: 1067 Mb/s

Bus Chipset:
Intel Hub Interface
Bus: 8 bit
real clock: 67 MHz (QDR)
Clock: 267 MHz
Band: 267 Mb/s

I gave a look also at the device manager and the Dvd-rom unit has this description:
Driver: Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2102
Driver Date: 01 July 2001
Driver version: 5.1.2535.0
Furnished by: Microsoft
File INF: cdrom.inf
ID hardware: IDE\CdRomTOSHIBA_DVD_ROM_SD-R2102___________1016___
Position information: 0

In the Toshiba Home Page ther is no driver I can download...

Ok, so far this is what I've been able to discern from your posts.

You have a Toshiba Satellite 1900-101 laptop.
It has a SD-R2102 dvd burner with firmware revision 1016.
The driver for this drive has been deleted, how or why is unknown.
The drive is listed in Device Manager (is it also listed in My Computer)?
You believe you need a driver for Windows XP for the drive (but there are none other than what the os provides).

I must have answers to the following questions:

1: Will the drive read a data or music disk?
2: Will the drive read a dvd movie disk?
3: Will the drive burn cd-r, cd-rw, and dvd disks?
4: Are any cd/dvd drives listed under CD/DVD section of Device Manager? If so what?
5: What is listed in Device Manager under the IDE Controllers section?
6: Are any devices mentioned in 4 & 5 flagged as having a problem?
7: Are any other devices flagged as having a problem (in Device Manager)?
8: Do you have the latest firmware updates for your laptop installed? What is the current firmware revision for your laptop?
9: In your original post, you said the dvd driver had been deleted. What makes you think so?
10: Do you know where to check for driver updates for your laptop?
here:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU

11: What burning application/version do you have installed (if any) or do you use WMP to burn cd-r?
12: What dvd decoding software/version do you have installed?

Wow, you are very kind, i hope to give correct answers.
Let's try:

Quote:
I must have answers to the following questions:

1: Will the drive read a data or music disk?
Yes, it read also data and music disk

2: Will the drive read a dvd movie disk?
Yes

3: Will the drive burn cd-r, cd-rw, and dvd disks?
I can bur only cd-r and cd-rw. I usually use Nero Premium.

4: Are any cd/dvd drives listed under CD/DVD section of Device Manager? If so what?
Yes, there is the Toshiba SD-R2102 listed with a yellow exclamation point.
When I tried to uninstall it, delete it and the to re-install, OS gave me error message, saying "driver absent or damaged".

5: What is listed in Device Manager under the IDE Controllers section?
I hope you mean this item: controller IDE Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master. In the description below this item: Driver description: Controller IDE Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master
Driver Date: 01/07/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2600.0
Driver provider: Microsoft
File INF: mshdc.inf

6: Are any devices mentioned in 4 & 5 flagged as having a problem?
No, this is the only with a problem.

7: Are any other devices flagged as having a problem (in Device Manager)?
No

8: Do you have the latest firmware updates for your laptop installed? What is the current firmware revision for your laptop?
I tried to update from Toshiba home page, but the page doesn't exist. I can't update firmware. I searched in all Toshiba pages, technical support, FAQ, Driver downloads, ecc. But i haven't found any help.

9: In your original post, you said the dvd driver had been deleted. What makes you think so?
Because when I try to re-install it I recieve a warning message saying "driver missing or damaged, error 39"

10: Do you know where to check for driver updates for your laptop?
here:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
Yes, but I haven't found any help.

11: What burning application/version do you have installed (if any) or do you use WMP to burn cd-r?
I use Nero and also WMP.

12: What dvd decoding software/version do you have installed?
I have various programs: Total Video Converter, Nero, PSP Movie Creator.

Thanks again for your taking care.
