Default Seagate External HDD(40 GB) not recognized by Windows XP

Hi Friends,

I've a 40 GB External HDD (Non-Branded). Its Seagate Momentus 4200.2 (40 GB) with "Gemini Casing". Its an old one and using it for years. I connect it via USB.

Now for more than a month I'm facing a problem. Whenever I Plug-in, I get a message "A porblem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly". I tried all the USB ports in my PC and none of them is working.

But it work fine on other desktops and laptops except my PC. I use Windows XP SP3. I know SP3 is not the problem since the Extrn. HDD works with different desktops that has SP3.

Another point is Flash Drive / Pen Drive is working fine in my PC.

Seagate Momentus 4200.2 (40 GB)
SN: 3LE02VCW
Model: ST9402113A

Does anyone has a Solution ?

Regards
Rafales

It sounds like you have one of 2 problems:

1: USB ports are not working
or
2: Drive is defective

Open Device Manager and give us a summary of what it reports about your usb port(s). Also, tell me if you see the word enhanced in the listings under USB Controller.

Are you by chance running this drive thru an external HUB? If so, is it a "Powered" (by an external power supply) hub? If you are connecting the drive to a usb hub, try connecting it directly to a usb port and see if it works ok that way.

Thanks for the reply.

1. The USB ports are working fine. I have no problems with my Transcend 4GB Pen Drive

2. The Drive is not defective. It works fine in my Laptop and other desktops.

3. This is the error message...

Device: USB Mass Storage Device
PNP Device ID: USB\VID_04CF&PID_8818\100
Error Code: This device cannot start
