Hi!
my problem is an often repeated one here -> sound card drivers , but i have been thru a few of these threads , the intel website and the realtek website as well and i cant find a compatible driver
i have an intel 845gv mobo and the integrated audio is 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller

82801 is not a sound chip. Read the dozens of threads posted in this forum and you will see/understand. Sound chips bear names like Realtek, Cmedia, ADI SoundMax, and Sigmatel.

There's nothing in the report that will help us find a sound driver for you so you must answer the following questions:

1: used in Desktop or Laptop?
2: Integrated on motherboard or add-on?
3: Is the motherboard retail or OEM?
4: Brand and model of pc?
5: Brand and model of motherboard?

the fact is i dont really know what my sound cards manufacturer is . i belive its a realtek ac'97 . thats what it says in the device manager with a bang. as for your questions, here the answers to the best of my knowledge

1. Its a desktop machine
2. the sound card is an integrated card
3. motherboard is retail
4. the system is assembled
5. the motherboard is an intel 845gv .

Please don't post excessive length posts that contain data unrelated to the request.

Intel doesn't make a 845GV motherboard.... they make a 845GV graphics chip and it could be installed on any motherboard manufacturers main board. And Intel 82801 is NOT a audio chip. Realtek is a sound chip but AC'97 is not a sound chip model nor a sound chip number, it's simply a term adopted by Microsoft in 1997 that defines sound standards. AC'97 technology ran from 1997 to around 2007. Since then HD has replaced AC'97 technology. Almost all sound chip makers used AC'97 technology but all AC'97 drivers are not the same and will not interchange between manufacturers.

I edited all your posts that contained irrelevant information and a lot that I left was redundant. Everest did not identify your motherboard nor the correct sound chip. We cannot help until we know what brand and model the motherboard is. So take a closer look at it and write down and post all numbers found on the board (in white silkscreen lettering).

And if you can't find any numbers, power it on and wait until the lower left side of the screen displays the BIOS id string and write it down. You can hit the pause key to freeze it on the screen long enough to write it down. Repost with the info and we will try to help locate the correct sound driver.

Hi, i work for a charity supporting families who have disabled children. we have had donated some computers which we would like to give to families who are unable to afford one so that they can access some of the things technology has to offer children with additional needs.

3 of the computers I have been given appear to have sound cards as they have the jacks in the back of the units for mike/headphones/speakers however the operating systems do not recognise that there is one.
I am assuming that as the companies who were getting rid of these deleted their memories by reloading the OS and this somehow affected the sound?

One of the computers is a dell xp home edition 5.1 2600, the others are stone computers also with windows xp home edition.

I have no idea which driver I am supposed to try because the OS on all of them tells me there is no sound card and therefore I can't identify the card.

I appreciate that this is now an outdated OS and these computers may be seen as some not worth saving but if we can get the sound working these will be used by children who need to develope hand eye co-ordination, speech patterns, visual queues etc. the soft ware for these does not need powerful modern computers but to get the attention of the children they need to be rewarding through sound and visuals.

Can anyone give me the time to help me get them up and running but use basic computer speak for a non techie?
