Default CD-drive can't get going.

Can anyone help?

When I insert a disc into my cd-drive it starts to spin, then stops, then starts again and stops again, this goes on until my PC freezes, the freeze normally lasts about 3-5 minutes before starting to work again, but the cd-drive keeps on starting and stopping.

My PC tells me there is no disc in the cd-drive, and I can't eject the disc via the pc or manually, I have to restart my pc to get the disc out.

I've tried replacing the cd-drive with my friends drive and get the same problem, even though his drive works fine on his pc, in fact my drive works fine on his pc.

I've been told that it's a driver problem, but I am hopeless with computers and any attempt to download new drivers could be a big mistake, I really have no idea what driver does what or where the problem could be located.

I would very much appreciate is someone could advise on what the problem may be, and how to fix it.

If I buy a new cd-drive, would it come with it's own drivers? and would these drivers automatically take over from the old cd-drive drivers?

Thank you very much for any advice.

I have done a full list (I think) of the drivers used on my PC.

I'm using Windows XP (Home edition) and my pc is about 3-4 years old.

idea Re: CD-drive can't get going.

I didn't see anything in that extensive list about your optical drive.

Brand and model?
Internal or external?
How does it connect to the pc? eg: ide, scsi, usb, parallel port?
If external USB, do you have Windows SP1 or SP2 installed?

Take a look in Device Manager and tell us the info under the cd/dvd drive section and also under the sections pertaining to the interface. eg: if the drive is USB then include info from Device Manager, under USB CONTROLLERS or if it connects internally via the IDE controller, include info from Device Manager, under IDE CONTROLLERS section.

If everything looks ok in Device Manager, I'd take a wild guess and say your drive has become defective. Only repair or replacement will solve that.

Default Re: CD-drive can't get going.

Thanks Jerry for taking the time to help a stranger.

I checked everything you suggested, and whilst I understand none of it, my pc tells me that everything is working OK.

So I bought myself a DVD-RW (that seems to accept all formats) today and swaped it for the old cd-drive in my pc.

Everything is working fine now.

Again, thanks for your help.
