Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Windows XP provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. No support for playing dvd disks or for burning dvd or cd-rw disks. For those tasks, compatible 3rd. party recording & dvd decoding software is required.
If your problem is non-detection, ie: drive is not listed in "My Computer", please read post #24 in this thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4
It contains instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix
Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.
And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.
(automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)
Alternately, download and install the DVD fix from the Web site below.
After performing this registry fix, just reboot the pc. Now your drive should be visible in My Computer and work properly.
Please state what the problem is and include some details for further assistance.
If problem is non-detection by the os, read on....
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.
To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
, then Run
, type REGEDT32
and click OK
Locate and then remove the following registry values:
Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
Note: Some programs
are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.
There is also a STICKY in the CD-DVD driver request forum that has instructions on how to do this fix along with a file from Microsoft that will perform the fix. Please read the STICKY for further instructions. This thread: http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=30011
