Optical drives never require a driver when used in any Windows os from Win95 up. Please state what the problem is and include some details.

I have the same issue. I bought a sony vaio CR-290 yesterday. I opened it up this AM and the DVR drive didn't play the disk I inserted so I looked in my computer and the drive is not shown there. I looked in device manager and there is the yellow exclamation point. The properties state the this device not working properly becasue the driver is corupt or missing. I tried numerous methods to unistall and reinstall. I have been to bove sony and pioneer support sights with no help from either.

you haven't done much reading to be posting this request. The fix is simple:

Please read this post first and try the recommendation of "deleting the upper and lower filters fix"

Post #24 in this thread: [url]http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=4[/url]

It contains instructions on the delete the upper and lower filters fix

Also, there is a STICKY posted in this forum that contains a file from Microsoft and instructions that will do this registry edit automatically instead of having to do it manually.

And here's another method that will do this automatically for you if you're afraid to edit the registry manually.

Code:
[url]http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131[/url] (automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip)

Exclamation Re: DRIVER NEEDED: Pioneer USA dvd-rw dvr k17rs (Windows Vista) [IDE]

Hi, I have the same issue with and Acer Aspire 5100-5674. The Pioneer DVR-K17RS drive did work at one time. My daughter loaded a Kodak printer and software. Immediately after that, the drive no longer showed up under "My Computer". I found out that the Kodak software had a history of doing this. I removed said software and printer. I have also followed all of your instructions regarding editing the registry, removing the Upper and Lower Filters. This worked initially, but something happened again and we lost the drive in "My Computer" Not only does it not show there, but nothing shows under device manager. I mean, no cd/dvd drives whatsoever. I would settle for a code 39 right now because at least then I feel like I could solve the issue. Also, when I go into the registry under that key that is referenced for the cd/dvd, "Upperfilters" & LowerFilters" do not show up, so I can't even delete them. Argh!
I am at a loss. I would prefer not to have to deal with the geek squad. LOL Any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards,
Brian Mc

The registry fix is only to be used on a system when the drive is missing from My Computer and Device Manager.

I'd suggest to download the "cdgone.zip" file and use only it to perform the fix with. It can be used several times so don't be afraid to try it several times. Either the drive is faulty or you're missing some small detail as the fix is a tried and tested fix for over 6 years.

As a last resort you can always use the recovery method for your machine and get it back to the way it was when you bought it, however if you have important files or data on the machine, you'd need to do a backup first.

And here's some additional info:

Also, for optical drive problems in Windows Vista, read [url="h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00817052&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&prod uct=3752864&os=2093&lang=en"]this HP web page.[/url] Even though it's for HP/Compaq machines, the same principal applies to all modern IDE optical drives regardless of brand.

If your drive stopped working after installing an Adobe product, please read [url="kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402306&sliceId=1"]this thread.[/url] Note: about 2/3rds. down the page is a video that shows how to perform the "delete upper and lower filters fix".

This is a multi-page thread dealing with issues of the optical drive and problems encountered in Windows XP and Vista. It covers a lot of issues and the most common causes and solutions. [url="discuss.extremetech.com/forums/thread/1004364399.aspx"]Click here[/url] to read the thread.

You can get instructions for performing this fix from Microsoft at [url="support.microsoft.com/kb/314060"]this page [Windows XP][/url] and from [url="support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/nl"]this page. [Windows 2000][/url]
