Question dos upgrade

Hey can someone tell me how to upgrade from Dos 3.2 to 6.22, this is an old 386 computer, and it will not recognize the Dos 6.22 disks?

the dos 6.22 is on 1.44 mb disks. your 386 probably has a 720 mb 3.5 drive .i don't know if you will find dos 6.22 on 720 mb disks.
good luck,

manually replace the dos command.com from the disk onto your operating system using a clean disk to perform the task then you will be able to install the new dos system .

I think Terry is right. If your floppy drive can't read 1.44 Mbyte disks then you really need a new one because there's not much left on those old 720k floppies. Come to think of it there's not much left on floppies at all! You should be able to pick up a floppy drive dirt cheap and plug it in. I've got a boxfull but the internet doesn't have facilities for e-mailing hardware; well not yet anyway! It's a fair bet that a 386 BIOS will recognize a 1.44 Mb drive because they were well established when that processor came out.

PS If DOS (or Win3.1) is all you need then just ignore any advice to junk the whole PC. Those old operating systems still work. They are also more reliable and load a lot faster than anything post 95.

Question

I've just thought of something. Is your old 386 a Compaq? If it is then you might have trouble because those old Compaqs weren't true PCs and they even had their own version of DOS. I once had to replace a floppy drive in a Deskpro and found it would only work as a 720k drive, even though I knew it was a 1.44M. The only thing that would read 1.44M disks was a drive from another Compaq.

Meanwhile, here's another way out:

1) Install DOS 6.22 on another PC and boot it.

2) Format about 10 disks in your own 720k drive

3) Use the SYS command on the other PC to make one bootable

4) Copy all the DOS files onto the disks

5) Boot your own PC from the 720k DOS floppy

6) Use SYS to put DOS 6.22 onto your hard disk

7) Copy all the other files off the floppies

It's no use copying files off the DOS 6.22 floppies onto 720k disks because most of them are compressed and you have to run the Setup program to get at them.

Hi!

Is very simple, you must have the three disks with installation of DOS 6.22, then use the SETUP command inside the Disk1. If you only have a system disk with 6.22, use the command SYS C: to transfer the system to hard disk.

MS-DOS 6.22 works in any plataform, (except an PC-XT), so you can install it on a 386. It runs better, have better support and enhanced enviroment. You should try to install Win3.11 on the 386 PC, both systems -DOS & Win3.11- occupies only 20-30 Mb.

Greetings,
