Keebbles is on a distinguished road
Default Tried other fixes- DVD and CD Roms still don't read disks

Both DVD (52x32Combo) and CDRom (Creative CD5233E-N) stopped working at same time indicating something universal happened overnight to make them stop working.

Sys info in Dev Manager said no probs, but I ran a deeper scan w/Alcohol 120%'s sys info utility (I'll append info at bottom of post) and all permissions and values were set to "NO" for somereason. (definitely not a drive failure, but something altered in reg or elsewhere.)

I've run all MS fixes as well as those listed on this forum here. Including the step by step CD problem wizard someone linked here that they wrote.
I ID'd several problems in registry and fixed them (I did make backups. Natch!)
Both upper and lower filters removed (redbook upper/Imapi lower) in registry including a deeper search that was indicated in another thread using DEVCON.
also did ( http://www.pruittfamily.com/paul/digitalsupporttech/does-not-read.htm )
Can't run sfc /scannow because I can't put in the WinXP CD to verify files in the dll cache either.
Luckily the alcohol sysinfo snip has a list of drivers/dlls that might help techs here.

Basically now the DVD and CD Rom drives show up in explorer and in sys diagnostics, show up as working, troubleshooting that way gives zero effective fixes.

NOTE: I Tried a sys restore- nothing. Went back to current sys line up. (even tried one that was a month old.)
Went Online and did a MS search and used their fixes. Nothing.
Went to several tech boards and located a potential problem. Nothing.
Removed upper and lower filters in Reg edit.
Manually changed drive types in registry to make sure that they were set to proper types (Dword value 1= cd 2 CD RW 3 DVD combo drive (CD RW +DVD).
Tried to find new drivers online.
Creative stopped supporting the Creative CD5233E-N - so finding a new Driver for that won't be easy. It worked just fine less than 72 hours ago.
The 52X32COMBO drive- samee prob finding a new driver - most tech boards assume I have one of the two standard CD RW wizards (by adaptec or roxio- neither is free.) used this fix http://anonym.to?http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21669&page=

Also ran PCFixer.exe and it ID'd a lot of registry probs that I fixed - reboots are faster, but problem is still extant. CD and DVD are silent as is shell when I insert a CD/Music CD/CD RW I used before and wrote stuff to/a Mix CD I burned/Various Game CD's and a DVD in the DVD drive (only).

Second note: I haven't physically removed the drives, but I have ensured that the laser heads and lenses are clean and free of obstructions. (This is looking more and more like a virus or malware attack. Maybe one that happened via the new Java succeptibilty on a visit to a website or via required popup. No files were DL'd via emails. I do have some new programs I d/l'd that did require running in Applocale to install and then again to run game (Japanese unicode, and I do have Japanese lang support set.) All were scanned by AVG,PandaSoft(online) and CA antivirus (resisdent sec sys - antispam/antivirus/firewall) also scanned w/search and destroy and Ad-aware 2007- nothing came up.
When drives failed to read or register a cd in them, no "!" were noted on sys info/diagnostics. (I have SCSI Raid controller turned off. Since I don't have a RAID drive)

-- if you need anymore info then I'll add it to this thread. I've tried what other threads have if the problem applied and used same principles to search for potential problems and changes in reg too. Manually fixed those I could, but drives are nonresponsive. (they do eject on command and are visible in system at all levels. They just are silent when media is in drives (disk/music/game cd's etc. .)

Thanks for any help possible.

Try setting the bios where the optical drive is the first boot device. Now insert any bootable disk into the drive and see if it will boot the machine.

Default Re: Tried other fixes- DVD and CD Roms still don't read disks

Tried booting with both DVD combo and CDR drives- neither worked.
Got same error message. Please insert bootable disk (was using XP CD.)

Went one step further.
Removed Drives from System Manager/Device Manager
Then turned off PC (completely/all cables removed)
Removed CD and DVD drives.

Reassembled cables and powered up-
made sure drives were gone in BIOS and Boot order of Bios-
Booted up normally.
Went to registry and checked for all references of CD/DVD drives (surprisingly all were gone.)
Ran all previous checks listed to make sure (after backing up reg first)
None were needed as all references were gone.
Manually popped open drives and air cleaned lenses and emitters.
Both lenses were clean to alcohol swabs too and unscratched as best I could tell w/dental mirror and penlight.
Turned off PC and reinstalled both again. (didn't change any settings on jumpers still Combo as master and CDR as slave.)
Powered up.
Went to Windows.
Did check on both. Neither would read, but would load/eject/spin upto speed/lock media just fine.

- Powered down and tried a year 2000 CDR (creative) XP said didn't support this device anymore, but it loaded legacy drivers anyway.
-it loaded a CD once and ran it fine.
-on trying xp cd drive refused to read a cd.
- all device features listed in first post under the alcohol 120% were triggered to "NO," basically disabbling the device.
- a reboot returned all other features, but no longer allowed CDRom to read disks.
- ran through (note NO ERROR CODES were shown in Device manager or system logs. System just turned off the device permanently as if by design.)
-powered down and installed the orginal drives.
- still didn't work and registry was clean of any of the known and listed errors mentioned on this board.

Old CD drive no longer function in Win 98 Box due to this.
Other drives do not.

Malwarebytes, Search and Destroy, CA AV/Malware Scanner/Ad-Aware 2007/process scanner/ and Hijack This! find nothing wrong w/ my system.
(other than some invalid active x programs left over from old games (hlp dir's one and all.)

-Only thing that comes to mind is that both these drives are 2001 models and neither are supported by their OEM or Creative anylonger and XP only ran them for a period of time and then terminated their usefullness at exactly the same time to force a hardware change on the user.
Wouldn't be the first device thus affected, even w/a current Win OS.

Only choice seems to be to buy a new DVD combo drive.

I would have already bought one just after I discovered it refused to boot from a boot disk. That's about 99/9% proof of a bad drive. All the software, firmware, fixes, cleaning, and misc. tricks will not resurrect a defective drive.
