No drivers are required when using this drive in Windows XP (other than what the os provides and by compatible recording and dvd decoding software). Windows XP includes native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. It contains no support for burning cd-rw or for playing dvd disks. For those 2 tasks, compatible recording and dvd decoding software is required.

eg: Easy CD Creator V5.x (or higher), Easy Cd & DVD Creator v6.x, Nero V 5.5.5.1 (or higher), WinDVD or PowerDVD

I have upgraded the firmware (from 1A14 to XA14) to no avail, and from what you said to genie, there is no point looking to update the driver as it is a plug and play device.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions, or should i start looking into buying an external drive?

Cheers,
Reshad

Yes, it sounds like you have a crapped out drive. I personally would buy another internal drive because external usb drives are sometimes problematic in booting to dos.

You are correct in no driver is required (or available) other than what the os provides. As a last resort, I would test the drive in another machine.

Cheers for the response Jerry,

I forgot to say it's a laptop... Even if i could change the drive myself, which i honestly prefer not doing; i don't think i could afford to cough up $249 which appears to be the going price for this drive! I have a HP Pavillion ze 5702 ea!!! and could probably get away with paying only $75 for a low end external...

Any advice on a decent value for money drive?

TDK branded Plextor drives are great drives and are much cheaper than the one's with Plextors name on them. I bought a new DVDR PX712A for 79 bucks (brand new) on eBay. On the tag is written TDK but in Device Manager it shows as Plextor DVDR PX712A. Plextor makes the most dependable drives on the market but from Plextor they're about twice the price. Also, Circuit City has drives fairly cheap priced. You can buy the parts, eg: drive and usb enclosure seperate or already configured in one package.

I found a guy who is selling the same model of drive as the one i'm having problems with, speaking of which, you may be able to advise me on this.

I successfully dismantled and remounted the main mechanism of my drive and was wondering if there is anything else to an internal drive than what you see embedded in the tray, i.e. Printed Circuit Board, motor, laser assembly and tracking motor?

There is a flexible ribbon wire that connects the PCB to the laptop and i managed to unplug that at the mech. end, and remove the whole tray mechanism!

If i buy the same model drive, what do you reckon is the probability of success, if i replace that part of the unit with a new set?

I understand very well how the drive works, but have no knowledge whatsoever about what are the most vulnerable parts... Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Reshad
