Default Dreaded Black Screen of Doom

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\CONFIG\\SYSTEM

Now hold your horses before anyone starts complaining that there are a million threads alrd out there with this very same problem. I am not asking for a solution, since I've already found 2. Am just wondering, which one is safer/should I go for/try first ??

OR

one from this very website itself:

+ Another Q.
Both solutions advocate pressing R and then selecting the installation that I would want to access from the recovery console... Typed in 1, pressed Enter and got:

D:\Windows instead of C:\Windows

Is this cause for concern? Should I still go ahead and try one of the solutions from either website? If yes, which one?

THANKS. Forgive me if this is a noob q or anything like that, this has never happened before.

idea Re: Dreaded Black Screen of Doom

In my opinion, the http://tech.icrontic.com link instructions would be the 1st. solution I'd try if I were in that same boat. A single professional opinion is much better than 91 different opinions (many from amateurs).

Please explain what D: is, ie: a different internal or external hard drive, an extra partition on the main internal boot drive, an Optical drive, or other?

Do you have Windows installed in more than one folder? ie: the normal/default drive/folder is C:\Windows .... there should be no others.

Depending on what procedures you have performed on the system and which options you have chosen ( from those presented on-screen) during those installs, you might have installed Windows in more than the normal drive/folder. You didn't give us adequate information to arrive at an intelligent opinion.
