The message is simply telling you that the driver for your cd rom drive is missing. With Windows 98, you don't need any DOS driver running or loading. Use Notepad and edit the autoexex.bat and config.sys files and remove any references to the following:

mscdex.exe

device=xxxxx.sys

Save the files, reboot, and you should not get any error messages now.

If you don't have Windows 98 installed and running, then you will need dos drivers installed in order to get the drive to work.

You don't need dos installed. You only need dos boot files and cd-rom driver on a floppy disk.

eg: any bootdisk will do the job... eg: www.bootdisk.com

If you used an install program, it should have setup the commands to launch the drivers in autoexec.bat and config.sys files automatically at boot-up.

If there was no install program, then you can setup the commands manually.

in autoexec.bat you will need the following command line:

mscdex.exe /d:cdrom001
Note: you must point the command to where the mscdex.exe file resides.
example: if mscdex.exe resides in folder: C:\cdrom, then the command line would look like this;

c:\cdrom\mscdex.exe /d:cdrom001

for the config.sys file you will need the following command line:

device=xxxx.sys /d:cdrom001 (where xxx is the actual name of the device driver you have.

ok this one i dont get it. what is actual name? i have a teac cdrom drive. pls help me on this line cause im getting error on xxxx.sys

DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
BUFFERS=20
FILES=60

DEVICE=xxx.sys /d:cdrom001 (this is what i see in the floppy so what is the right way)

this is what i have on autoexec.bat and i dont get no error
@echo off
LH mscdex.exe /d:cdrom001

If you have the CD-ROM drive connected to the primary or secondary IDE port, edit this statement:

DEVICE=C:\TEAC\TEAC_CDI.SYS /D:TEAC-CDI
but still i get error it said-- the following file is missing or corrupted c:\teac\teac_cdi.sys there is an error on line 6
