Exclamation Windows Missing File

My XP computer is missing the hal.dll file. The computer will not start up so I put in the XP disk and boot up the computer in recovery mode. Tried typing all the various commands, such as "mdtemp" "chkdsk" and "bootcfg" but it says access denied or in some cases "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." Someone help please!

If your computer won't start up, then how do you know that the hal.dll file is missing? If you're familiar with dos commands then use the extract command to extract the hal.dll from your Windows XP disk.

for a list of the switches that go along with the command type: extract /?
Make sure there is a space present between t and /

If you're unable to run the command, then you will surely need to reformat and reload the os.

Extract command is not recognized. How do I get a specific file from the cd to run in dos?

idea Re: Windows Missing File

Sorry, that command is only good for use in Windows 9x and Windows ME. In Windows XP it's EXPAND /? for a list of switches.

To extract a single file for example: expand^D:\i386\hal.dl_^C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll

^ represents a space (very important)
The first half is the location of the compressed file you wish to expand to the hard drive. The last half is where you want the compressed file to expand to or extract to. These are only examples..... the locations might not be correct in my example.

If you can get Windows to run, there's 2 ways to do it in Windows. Read these Microsoft threads for an explanation:

Okay You are being Very helpful, Thanks.

I have the Windows XP Startup CD in drive e: when I do chkdsk it says there are some unrecoverable errors. So I put the hal.dll file on a USB drive in d: to try and extract it to c:\windows\systems32\hal.dll. So the command I issued was expand^D:\hal.dll^C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll And Came back with Access is Denied. Any Ideas where to go to now?

The usb stick drive cannot be read in DOS. Also, are you able to read the Windows XP install disk from DOS? If so, how are you doing that without loading dos drivers for the optical drive?

The reason why your command failed is you missed by one digit, ie: you omitted the underscore in the command line. For example, it should read:

expand^D:\i386\hal.dl_^C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll

be sure to put the underscore in the front part of the command line because that's the true compressed name of the file on the XP install disk.

Do you want me to upload the hal.dll file? are you able to download?
