a cd-r is usually blank unless it's been recorded. Your information is lacking adequate info for us to help. Please explain what your doing and how your doing it.

Is this when you place a blank cd-r into the drive to record, then you get some kind of error saying the drive cannot recognize the disk? If so, the what recording software are you using when you get that message?

If you have recording software installed and using it when this error occurs, then your recording software is the problem. It needs updating.

When I put the cd-r in it will not do anything. When I open Nero and go to disc info it says no media. If I go to my computer and go to my disc drive it is just like nothing is in there. There is no error messege, it just does nothing.

I tried to boot it with the XP cd and it won't read it. Whenever I put a cd or cd-r in, I get a solid amber light on the drive. I have updated the firmware to UYS3. The drive is still not working.

Why did you update the firmware and did you get it from your laptop maker? Did you have this problem before doing so?

Additional info about flashing can be found here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=164553

Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager? If not, then you have a common non-dectection problem. Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

And here's another mothod that will do this automatically for you if your afraid to edit the registry manually.

I updated the firmware after this problem came up. The drive does show up in my computer and will read and write dvd's with no problems.

It's time for you to start thinking about replacing this drive or send it to HP for repair. They don't repair.... they just exchange it for another faulty unit someone else sent in.... I know because they did it to me. Cost me $150.00 and I still had to buy another drive.

Never update firmware in an attempt to make a faulty drive work... it never does. It didn't require firmware updating back when it was working (with factory fw) did it?
