You can also do this if your XP installation is crashed: boot your computer with a Knoppix CD and copy all valuable data to another partition or a memory stick. After that, reinstall windows XP. A Knoppix CD is also useful for detecting your computer's hardware: the boot log shows what is detected.

idea Re: lost computer password

You forgot to add the little note posted at the bottom of the page, ie:

Trial Limitation:
Lists all the user accounts, but doesn't remove the passwords for the trial version.

The trial version doesn't do anything other than list all the user accounts.

You must pay $29.95 for the full registered version in order to actually reset the password to blank.

Thumbs up Re: lost computer password

Here is an easy way:

1. When the login screen comes up hit ctrl-alt-delete.
2. The old (win 9x) login screen comes up. For username type: Administrator
password: (leave blank).
3. This logs you in to the administrator account which is usually hidden by default. Go to start-->run-->type in cmd.
4. In the command prompt type the following exactly: NET USER {username} {new password}
where {username} is the name of the account you are trying to recover and {new password} is any password you want
5. Hit enter, a message should appear saying command completed succesfully.
6. You now have a new password.
