Nikon CoolScan LS-20E working with XP ProSP2
Hi, as they think I'm an Expert (wrong!), I may as well try to live up to it.
Had a Nikon Coolscan 2 LS-20E for years, it was a great machine in Win 95 days. And STILL IS. Here's how to install it on XP Pro SP2......
Install Adaptec AVA 2906 SCSI card with D25 external socket. 50 pin internal.(If thats what you need) XP excepts it, no drivers needed. (don't connect scanner) Start computer.
Install NikonScan vs.1.63, from your old installation CD, or download it from www.nikonusa.com. ONLY this version for Win 95 etc..
Goto the NikonCtl. exe file at:
Right click it in file manager~select~Properties~Compatability Tab~ Tick "Run as Windows 95".......~OK~OK etc.....Close down computer.
Connect scanner, turn it on, let it bootup.........Turn on computer, Now the "Hardware wizard" will start, Select " No search, I will choose location".....
(The odd bit)
Choose ANY driver folder, to get the OK button active. Click it.....Next dialog..."Could not find driver" etc....Tick "Do not show dialog again"......Click OK or Finish.... (You get a popup saying "could not install driver, scanner not installed".....(rubbish its installed by NikonScan)
Now when you check the Device Manager the scanner is listed under Other Devices and its Properties say its working, but Driver Details say "No drivers needed or not installed".....(rubbish again)
Put a Negative in the scanner and fire up Nikon Control 2.2 (really 1.63) and click preview, you know what, IT SCANS !!!!!!!
This was without virus software. If you want to do a Restore Point do it, the Nikon Win95 software doesn't. The uninstaller removed the 2 registry entries at:
HLM\Software\NIKON....and ....HCU\Software\NIKON....Now where are thoughs 1000's of decaying negatives, and I hear that Hamrick's latest VueScan program works, after you have installed NikonScan and got things working.
