Question sound wont work after I installed win 98

my problem is that the sound wont work on my computer (sony vaio pcv120)
after I have installed win 98. The device manager in my control panel, under sound video and game controllers recognizes "mpu- 401 compatible", and does not recognize other sound drivers. I have tried installing (by adding new hardware) the Avance 97 intel 82801 audio controller (which has worked on my comp before I installed win 98), but that didnt work either. Does anyone know how I can cause the sound to work again? what should I do?

did you?:
update to win98 over 95 or wiped the drive and start fresh?
if later is the case, the recoveryCD wont work.
