There nothing unusual about your situation. It's done every day by thousands all over the world from every nation. In case you weren't aware, pc makers are not writing XP drivers for pc's they built and designed to run under Windows Vista os. This is an era of changes.... many changes so you gotta flow with the tide of get out of the ocean.
Another task that is absolutely essential is you must first become acquainted with your machines on-board hardware. If you don't know or didn't take the time to check in Device Manager while it was running Vista, then your task becomes more difficult. There's 2 methods to accomplish this...
1: use eyeballs, light, and magnifying glass and look, take note of numbers found with the physical examine. Chipset numbers, motherboard numbers, bios id string, and anything else that you can find.
2: Use hardware identification software like Everest Home Edition. It will usually identify most hardware in a pc as well as the actual motherboard. And in some case, it will provide a link to the drivers required. However, it's not absolute and some manual identification may be required.
The time to find XP drivers for a Gateway machine is BEFORE you re-format and attempt to install a non-supported OS. Gateway has no plans to write/create Windows XP drivers for this machine (last time I checked). They are too busy writing Windows Vista drivers for new machines.
Your only chance at finding XP drivers will come from intense reading.... ie: the Gateway drivers section and their talk forums. I'm sure your not the only (or first) person to try this difficult (if not impossible) task. So chances are good that you can find someone who did and find their post and possible links to the proper drivers. But you won't find them unless you DO some reading and looking. Along day 2 or 3, you'll be ready to pull all your hair out. And near the end, you may discover that things don't work exactly like they did in Vista. You may also find that a complete bios overhaul is required in order to get all hardware working like it did in Windows Vista. And be ready for disappointments. Lots of folks have been doing this very task for the last 2 years or so.... some successful and some not. Don't ever think you can make a drastic change like this easily.... it just doesn't work that way.
The last time I looked (ie: day before yesterday) Gateway still had a talk/tech forum so I suggest you start there.
Also, realize that notebooks are very much different than desktops and the driver requirements are more stringent. Notebooks cannot use generic drivers... they will fail during install. You must use specific drivers from the notebook maker or "hacked for laptops" drivers. These links may help in that area:
