slow loading win 2k on dell cpx laptop

I'm trying to load win 2K Pro on a Dell Latitude CPx (after reformatting in NTFS). Although cpu speed is 450 Mhz it's taken 2 days just to get to the reboot phase and it seems to be stuck on the Win start screen. Any hints?

How much ram is installed? Have you added new ram chips to machine lately?

That model has a distinct habit of the cpu becoming partially dislodged from the cpu socket. Check it first.

Remove ram chips and use a pencil eraser to clean contacts. CPx users claim Windows 2000 and Windows XP both have all native drivers for the machine, ie: they don't have to hunt down drivers as the os has those drivers built-in.

laptop shows 128 MB ram installed.

Windows 2000 will run with 128 mb. of ram but as in all systems, it will run faster with 256 or 512 mb. I've loaded Win 2000 on many machines with 128 mb. of ram in less than 2 hrs. Increasing ram in 128 mb steps appears to provide no more than about 10% speed increase in the system.
