Are the drives listed in My Computer? If not, you need to run the utility to delete those upper and lower filters again. CdGone.zip is my favorite.

Also, have you tried uninstalling both drives then reboot the pc to allow the system to redetect and reinstall the drives automatically without user intervention?

What about the IDE drivers.... are they reported to be ok in Device Manager? Do they match the actual hardware?

Code:
http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=22131 (automatic fix, post #7, download file: CdGone.zip) Unzip the file, then launch it. I highly recommend this fix to use over the others. It's quick and requires no skill to use.

It finally managed to recognise the drives but it doesn't showthem on the libraries... (Administrative tools-Computer Management etc etc)...

Do we know what caused this? Is it a windows bug? What causes the error? And do I have any luck continuing searching a solution or should I format my pc?

Thanks for the immediate response!

Are the drives listed in My Computer?

Are they listed in Device Manager and Windows Explorer?

If they are listed in Device Manager, are they flagged as having any problem?

The drives are not listed in my Computer.

They are listed in device manager without an exclamation mark

They are not showed in libraries section in Computer management

You either have a bad drive or you still need to delete the upper and lower filters in the registry. If you've already performed the registry fix and the drive is not shown in My Computer then the drive is either bad or it's not connected properly or it's configured incorrectly, ie: master/slave/cs jumper is not set properly.

Test the drives one at a time with the jumper in the same place for both drives, ie: if connected to the secondary ide port, then drives both should be set to master or CS depending on whether the hard drive is set for master or CS.

If both drives work configured as a single drive, then re-install them both and set one as master and the other as slave (or CS depending on whether or not the system uses CS). If the hard drive is set to CS, then both optical drives also must use CS.
