Internal ide or SATA drive or external USB drive? Is the drive listed in My Computer and Device Manager? If listed in Device Manager, is it flagged as having a problem?

What OS are you running it under?

The HD appears into the BIOS?

How much time have the computer? Sometimes, if the computer is very old the Battery is over and the BIOS fall down.

If it's ok, why don't you try to do a low level format?

Bad advice. Modern hard drives are low level formatted at the factory and do not require this procedure to be performed again. Besides, doing so will most likely render the drive inoperable if not done with the proper software and done by an experienced person. I never tell a member to do that simply because it isn't needed in about 99% of cases and also because I wouldn't want to be responsible if the procedure I told a member to do did indeed create a paperweight.
