Hi I have a Gateway computer I upgraded and installed Windows xp Professional in for resale. Sold system and had customer return because it locked up. I traded out systems and this one still locks up . I have formatted and reinstalled the os, changed out hard drives , jumped in a different hd with windows 98, changed out ram, and several peripherals, and the system still locks up, sometimes right away and sometimes after a while. Any suggestions?

I deal with a large number of gateways at work, specifically the gw model E1800. My machines lock up too, just as you said..."sometimes right away and sometimes after a while." Gateway has tried to replace all components and it still happens. The only thing that i found that works is to disable the half duplex unimodem in the device manager. Even this solution isn't 100% guaranteed to stop the lock ups. I run w2k on the machines here so i feel this is a hardware problem that even gw can't figure out. They sent engineers to my place of business to see the problem and have taken machines back with them to work on. So far no solution from gw.

Rick,

Have you tried changing out the memory module/s ?? Lock-ups are common with memory simm faults.

Alternatively, I had a PC with similar symptoms a few years ago which turned out to be a motherboard fault...ie ended up changing out the motherboard - put back all the same original peripherals and it is still running ok today.
