I want to reinstall an old computer in order to learn to do this.
I formatted the hard disc (C:) of a compaq prolinea 5120. It's a pentium II low speed machine.
It has a compaq CD-rom model CR-588-BCQ the last two letters probably standing for compaq. There are driversets available (for CR-588-B) on this site.
The problem I have to solve is that the computer does not recognise the CD-rom when I try to install windows 98 from the diskettedriver. The CDrom does make noises but is not recognised.
I want to install a driver for the CDrom, but how do I do this? Setup seems to be the way to do it but it does not install any driver, so I can't reinstall windows 98.

Any answers would be grately welcomed.

John.

Use a Windows 98 startup disk (often called Emergency Boot Disk) to boot your pc. You must change the boot order in pc bios to boot from floppy first. Boot machine with disk in floppy drive. A "Boot Menu" will appear... choose "boot with cd-rom support". Once boot has completed, place Win 98 installation disk in drive. Change to drive containing the installation disk (usually E: if you only have one hard drive in system, but could be another letter). example e: then press enter, cd win98 press enter...then type setup.exe and press enter. This will start the Win98 installation program (providing the cd-rom drive is working, properly installed/configured and driver loaded sucessfully). You should get on-screen notification if the dos driver loaded during boot. If you don't then you don't have a working drive or don't have it properly configured/installed.

Note: I believe the CD-588QC is built by Panasonic for Compaq... should be the same drive as their CR-588x... 32x internal ide drive.
